State Fair Farm

Help Grow the Next Generation Through Agriculture

North Idaho State Fair Farm is a KC Fairgrounds program providing local youth with hands-on agricultural experiences that build responsibility, leadership, communication, and real-world skills.

Launching with the Youth Ag Experience Sheep & Goat Breeding Project, the program will give youth the opportunity to care for and manage livestock throughout the year, with their work culminating in exhibition at the North Idaho State Fair.

The Youth Ag Experience

1 of 4
State Fair Farm is a new youth-led agriculture program at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds designed to give local youth meaningful, hands-on experiences in agriculture while building skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

Beginning with a Sheep & Goat Breeding Project, State Fair Farm will grow through three phases to create opportunities for youth to explore animal agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, sustainability, leadership, and more.

Three phases. One purpose: Inspiring the next generation through agriculture.

We Start Here

Sheep & Goat Breeding Project

The first Youth Ag Experience will focus on a Sheep & Goat Breeding Project.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in:

  • Animal husbandry
  • Nutrition
  • Health and wellness
  • Breeding and reproduction
  • Record keeping
  • Daily livestock management
  • Show preparation and presentation

Youth will care for their projects throughout the program, building skills and confidence along the way.

And then they get to show what they’ve accomplished.

The experience culminates at the North Idaho State Fair, where participants can exhibit their animals and share the results of their hard work with the community.

Phase 1 - Breeding Project

Hands-on livestock care, management, responsibility, and exhibition.

Phase 2 - Greenhouse

Food production, horticulture, sustainability, and growing systems.

Phase 3 - Aquaculture

Fish production, water quality, science, and environmental stewardship.

More Than Agriculture.

It's About Building Futures.

Agriculture is about much more than raising animals or growing food. It teaches young people how to work hard, solve problems, manage their time, communicate with others, and take responsibility for something beyond themselves.

State Fair Farm is designed to give Kootenai County youth a place to learn those lessons through real work and real experiences.

Participants will have opportunities to develop:

  • Responsibility & Time Management
  • Leadership & Confidence
  • Communication & Teamwork
  • Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking
  • Sustainability & Stewardship
  • Hands-On Agricultural Skills

Our goal is to create experiences where young people don't just learn about agriculture—they participate in it.

Why State Fair Farm?

Creating Opportunities for Youth to Discover What's Possible

Not every young person grows up on a farm.

State Fair Farm is designed to help bridge that gap.

We want Kootenai County youth to have the opportunity to experience agriculture firsthand—even if they have never owned an animal, planted a crop, or set foot in a production facility before.

Through hands-on projects, youth can discover interests, develop confidence, and begin to see agriculture as something they can participate in, build a career around, or simply carry with them throughout life.

And agriculture itself is changing.

Today's agricultural industry needs people who understand not only animals and crops, but also technology, science, sustainability, communication, business, and leadership.

State Fair Farm is designed with that future in mind.
