The History of the Kootenai County Fairgrounds

The North Idaho State Fair and Kootenai County Fairgrounds have served as a vibrant hub for community, entertainment, and education for over a century. Rooted in the traditions of agriculture, youth development, and regional celebration, these historic grounds have continually evolved to meet the needs of North Idaho.

From Humble Beginnings to a Community Landmark

Originally a gathering place shaped by transportation, agriculture, and aviation, the land has a rich legacy. Its ties to Weeks Field—a key aviation hub in the mid-20th century—reflect the region’s progression from early mail routes and military support to today’s bustling event center.

The fair itself began in the early 1920s, highlighting local 4-H youth and agricultural projects. Over time, the fair grew in size and significance, leading to new facilities, expanded exhibits, and major additions like the grandstand and Jacklin Building. The grounds have hosted everything from horse racing and concerts to educational fairs and community celebrations.

Preserving Legacy and Community Spirit

Throughout its history, the Fair Board and management have honored the site’s agricultural roots while adapting to the changing needs of the community. Today, the Kootenai County Fairgrounds remain a cornerstone for regional events, fostering connection, learning, and entertainment for generations to come.

Explore more about the fairgrounds’ journey and discover how this historic site continues to bring people together year after year.

Moments That Made the Fair

1 of 15

Before the bright LEDs, giant rides, and packed concert nights, the fair was already doing what it does best, bringing people together.

These photos capture the heartbeat of the fairgrounds through the years. Kids mid-stride in sack races, laughing without worrying who wins. Livestock races that blurred the line between competition and pure chaos. Dance floors filled with neighbors, grandparents, and strangers moving to the same rhythm. Flower judges leaning in close, debating petals like it’s the Super Bowl. Crowds spilling down the midway under strings of flags, no phones in sight, just presence.

You’ll see grit, joy, dust, denim, laughter, and a whole lot of personality. This is where traditions were born, where memories stuck, and where community showed up year after year to celebrate hard work, creativity, agriculture, and each other.

The fair has changed. The heart hasn’t.

Take a moment. Look closely. Chances are, you’ll recognize a feeling. And maybe even a face.
